The excavator slewing reducer (also known as the swing gearbox) is a key transmission assembly installed between the slewing motor and slewing ring gear. It mainly performs speed reduction and torque amplification to enable smooth 360° rotation of the upper revolving structure.
Core Structure
Sun gear: Splined with the slewing motor shaft for high-speed power input.
Planet gear: 3 to 4 pieces per stage; rotates both around the sun gear and on its own axis to transmit torque.
Ring gear: Fixed to the reducer housing and kept in constant mesh with planet gears.
Planet carrier: Acts as the power output end to drive the lower drive pinion.
Brake: Built-in wet multi-disc brake; spring-applied braking and hydraulic release to prevent inertial slewing and runaway rotation.
Housing and bearing: High-strength cast or forged steel housing, supported by heavy-duty bearings, delivering reliable dustproof and leakproof performance.
Working Principle
High-speed, low-torque power from the hydraulic motor flows sequentially through the sun gear, primary planet gears, primary planet carrier, secondary sun gear, secondary planet gears and secondary planet carrier for power output. The pinion rotates at low speed with high torque, meshes with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing, and drives the excavator upper structure to rotate.
Common Faults and Causes
Abnormal noise / Stuttering: Gear wear and pitting, bearing damage, insufficient or contaminated lubricant, abnormal meshing clearance.
Oil leakage: Oil seal aging, housing cracks, excessive oil level, breather valve blockage.
Weak / Slow slewing: Gear and bearing wear, incomplete brake release, motor internal leakage, mismatched transmission ratio.
Overheating: Oil shortage or deterioration, overload operation, brake dragging, poor heat dissipation.
Gear jumping / Broken gear teeth: Impact load, foreign matter ingress, fatigue wear, installation misalignment.
