The excavator swing reducer (commonly known as the 'swing gearbox') is a key transmission component connecting the swing motor and the swing large gear. Its core function is to reduce speed, increase torque, and drive the upper structure to rotate smoothly 360°.

Core Structure

• Sun gear: Splined to the slewing motor to input high-speed power.

• Planet gear: 3 to 4 pieces per stage, rotates both revolutionally around the sun gear and rotationally on its own axis to transmit torque.

• Ring gear: Fixed to the housing and meshes with the planet gears.

• Planet carrier: Outputs power and drives the lower pinion (drive gear).

• Brake: Built-in wet multi-disc brake; spring-applied braking and hydraulic release to prevent slewing runaway.

• Housing and bearing: High-strength cast steel / forged steel housing, supported by heavy-duty bearings, with dustproof and leakproof performance.

Work roles

High-speed and low-torque power from the hydraulic motor is transmitted via the sun gear, first-stage planetary set and second-stage planetary set to the output planet carrier. The pinion rotates in low speed and high torque, engages with the slewing bearing inner gear ring, and enables the upper structure to slew.

Common Faults & Root Causes
• Abnormal noise / Jerking operation: Gear abrasion and pitting, bearing failure, lubricant shortage or contaminated oil, improper meshing backlash.
• Oil seepage & leakage: Worn oil seals, housing fissures, overfilled lubricant level, clogged breather vent.
• Sluggish / Underpowered slewing: Worn gears or bearings, incomplete brake release, hydraulic motor internal bypass, unmatched transmission ratio.
• Excessive overheating: Low oil level or degraded lubricant, overloaded operation, brake drag, inadequate heat dissipation.
• Gear skipping / Tooth breakage: Shock loading, ingress of foreign debris, fatigue deterioration, shaft misalignment during assembly.
