An excavator’s hydraulic pump is its mechanical "heart", a fundamental component providing power for all operational movements.
Core Function
Rotated by the engine, the hydraulic pump transforms the engine’s mechanical power into pressure energy of hydraulic oil. Pressurized oil is delivered to cylinders and hydraulic motors to achieve boom lifting, arm telescoping, bucket opening/closing, vehicle travel and upper‑structure swing. Without this pump, all excavator functions stop.
High‑speed rotation of internal pump parts (engine‑driven) draws in hydraulic oil and builds pressure. Pressurized oil flows through tubing to drive boom, arm, bucket, travel and slew cylinders/motors. Releasing controls allows oil to return to the hydraulic tank for continuous circulation.
Power Input: The excavator engine drives the hydraulic pump’s main shaft and piston cylinder block at high rotational speed through a coupling device.
Oil Suction (Low‑Pressure)
Several pistons in the cylinder block rotate synchronously with it. Driven by the swash plate, pistons move back and forth. Retraction expands pump volume, creating negative pressure to draw oil from the hydraulic reservoir.
Oil Discharge (High‑Pressure)
Piston extension compresses oil by reducing internal volume, generating high‑pressure oil that flows through the valve plate and outlet into the main control valve.
Automatic Flow Tuning (Key Variable Displacement Function)
When undertaking heavy‑load applications such as digging and lifting, the pump automatically raises displacement and flow rate to increase power. For idle or light‑load use, displacement is lowered to cut fuel consumption. Built‑in servo valves and regulators adjust swash plate angles to vary piston stroke lengths.
