As the core power unit of an excavator’s hydraulic system, the main hydraulic pump is driven by the engine. It transforms mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic power and transports pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors, enabling all operational actions of the excavator. Most construction excavators adopt axial variable piston pumps as their main hydraulic pumps. Medium and large-sized excavators are fitted with integrated dual main pumps and a rear-mounted pilot gear pump assembly. Two separate high-pressure oil supply pipelines connect to the main control valve, supporting composite working motions, with a rated operating pressure ranging from 28 to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the tail runs at 3 to 4MPa with a small flow rate, providing pilot pressure oil for control joysticks and main valve spools. Inside the pump, piston components fixed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate with the main shaft, completing oil absorption and pressurization. Adjusting the tilt angle of the swash plate changes the piston stroke, thereby regulating the pump displacement. The external servo regulator drives the swash plate based on hydraulic feedback signals: a larger inclination angle boosts flow volume and working speed, while a smaller angle cuts fuel consumption and avoids engine stalling. The valve plate separates low-pressure oil inlet and high-pressure oil outlet channels to realize hydraulic oil distribution. The pump features three control modes: constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement under increased loads to protect the engine and optimize power utilization; the LS load sensing system delivers flow according to actual demand and maintains low displacement at idle for fuel economy; the HP pressure limiting function reduces displacement at peak pressure to prevent pipeline and cylinder rupture. Common pump faults include internal leakage caused by worn pistons, faulty valve plates or clogged regulators, which results in sluggish operation and insufficient power. A stuck regulator at maximum displacement leads to engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling under heavy loads. Severe internal leakage generates excessive heat from pressure loss, causing abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. Air ingestion, low oil level, and damaged bearings or pistons will produce unusual operating noise. Routine maintenance includes regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to prevent wear on precision internal components. It is essential to ensure tight sealing of oil suction pipes to avoid air intake and equipment vibration, and keep hydraulic oil at the standard level to sustain stable pump operation.
