The main hydraulic pump serves as the core power component for excavator hydraulic systems, obtaining driving torque from the engine to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. By delivering pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors, it powers all working movements of the excavator. Most construction-grade excavators are equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavator models feature an integrated dual main pump and rear pilot gear pump unit. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits feed the main control valve, supporting simultaneous compound operations, with a rated working pressure range of 28MPa to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the machine rear operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for control handle manipulation and main valve spool adjustment. Piston groups fixed on the cylinder block and pump shell rotate with the main shaft, completing oil absorption and pressurization cycles. Adjusting the inclination of the swash plate alters piston stroke, which regulates the pump’s displacement value. An external servo actuator controls swash plate movement based on real-time hydraulic feedback. A greater tilt angle increases flow rate and operational speed, while a smaller angle minimizes fuel consumption and prevents engine shutdown. The valve plate partitions low-pressure intake and high-pressure outlet channels to distribute hydraulic oil effectively. The pump is equipped with three essential control functions for reliable operation. Constant power control intelligently reduces pump displacement under rising loads, protecting the engine and enhancing power efficiency. The LS load-sensing system delivers on-demand flow based on actual working needs and maintains low idle displacement to conserve fuel. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure to prevent hydraulic pipe and cylinder rupture damage. Common malfunctions include internal leakage from worn pistons, cracked valve plates or blocked regulators, resulting in sluggish operation and insufficient power output. A seized maximum-displacement regulator leads to engine overload, black smoke and stalling during heavy-load work. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, causing abnormal hydraulic oil overheating. Air entering the hydraulic system, low hydraulic oil levels and defective bearings or pistons produce unusual operating noise. Daily maintenance involves regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to avoid abrasion of precision internal parts. Operators must ensure tight sealing of oil suction pipelines to prevent air ingestion and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to maintain stable pump performance.
