The swing reducer of excavators, widely known as the swing gearbox, is a crucial transmission component that connects the slewing drive motor to the large slewing gear ring. Its main function is speed reduction and torque increase, enabling the upper superstructure to perform smooth 360‑degree rotational movement.

Primary Structure

Sun Gear: Joined to the slewing motor splines, it inputs high‑speed power source.
Planet Gears: 3‑4 pieces per stage, orbiting the sun gear while self‑rotating to transmit torque force.
Ring Gear: Mounted fixedly on the housing and meshes with planet gear sets.
Planet Carrier: Delivers output power to drive the bottom small drive gear.
Brake: Internally installed wet multi‑disc brake, spring‑engaged and hydraulically released, preventing reverse rotation phenomenon.
Housing & Bearings: High‑strength cast or forged steel casing, supported by heavy‑duty load‑bearing bearings, with dustproof and anti‑leakage properties.

Low‑torque high‑speed power supplied by the hydraulic motor is transmitted sequentially through the sun gear, first‑stage planetary group and second‑stage planetary group to the output planet carrier. The pinion rotates in low‑speed high‑torque state, meshing with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing to drive upper‑structure slewing.

Usual Fault Conditions & Core Causes

Unconventional noise / Jerky operational motion: Gear wear and pitting corrosion defects, bearing damage failure, insufficient or impurity‑containing lubricant, inappropriate gear meshing gap.
Oil permeation and leakage issues: Degraded oil seals, housing crack defects, excessive lubricant filling amount, clogged air‑vent hole.
Sluggish or power‑deficient slewing performance: Worn gears or bearing assemblies, incomplete brake release function, hydraulic motor internal flow bypass, mismatched reduction ratio.
