Function

The main hydraulic pump is the central power part of an excavator’s hydraulic circuit. Powered by the prime engine, it turns mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and transports pressurized medium to hydraulic motors to drive all working actions including lifting, digging, traveling and slewing.

Type

Engineering excavators generally adopt axial variable displacement piston pumps. Medium and large tonnage machines use integrated dual main pumps equipped with a rear pilot gear pump.
These two high-pressure pumps have separate oil supply circuits, supplying oil to the main control valve for compound actions, with working pressure at 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump at the pump rear runs at 3~4MPa with low flow, supplying pilot oil for operating handles and valve spools.

Internal Parts

Multiple piston assemblies inside the housing and cylinder block rotate with the main shaft to finish oil suction and pressure generation.
The swash plate adjusts its inclination angle to change piston stroke and pump displacement.
Controlled by hydraulic feedback signals, the external servo regulator drives the swash plate. Increased angle raises flow and speed; decreased angle reduces fuel consumption and prevents engine stall.
The valve plate separates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet to distribute hydraulic fluid.

Three Control Modes

Constant power regulation decreases pump displacement as load increases, protecting the engine and realizing full power output.
The LS load sensing system supplies flow on demand and maintains low displacement at idle to save fuel.
The HP pressure limiting function cuts down pump displacement at peak pressure, protecting hydraulic pipes and cylinders from damage.

Common Failures

Worn pistons, defective valve plates or blocked regulators trigger internal leakage, resulting in slow operation and power deficiency.
Regulator stuck at maximum displacement will cause engine overload, black smoke and stall under heavy working conditions.
Severe internal leakage produces extra heat from pressure loss and leads to hydraulic oil overheating.
Air entry, low hydraulic fluid level or damaged bearings and pistons will cause abnormal noise during operation.

Maintenance

Replace hydraulic oil and filter elements periodically to prevent precision parts from abrasive damage. Keep suction pipelines sealed well to avoid air intake and equipment shake. Keep hydraulic fluid at the rated level to prevent pump failure.
