The turbocharger of an excavator is an exhaust-driven air compressor mounted on the engine. Its core principle is to use exhaust gas energy to compress intake air, enabling more and fuller combustion of diesel fuel, thereby significantly boosting power output, reducing fuel consumption and lowering black smoke emission.

Core Functions
1. Power enhancementFor engines of the same displacement, power can increase by 30%–50% with a substantial rise in torque, delivering stronger performance under heavy loads and during climbing.
2. Fuel saving and emission reductionSufficient intake air ensures complete combustion, cutting fuel consumption by about 5% and reducing black smoke, CO and HC emissions.
3. Torque improvementHigher low-speed torque provides greater strength for excavator heavy-load starting and digging operations.

Basic Structure (Three Core Components)

Turbine end (exhaust side)
Connected to the exhaust manifold. High-temperature exhaust gas at 600–900℃ impacts the turbine impeller, driving the shaft to rotate at high speed of 100,000–200,000 revolutions per minute.
Compressor end (intake side)
Driven coaxially with the compressor impeller, it compresses fresh air filtered by the air cleaner, then delivers the boosted air into the cylinder.
Center housing (bearing & lubrication assembly)
Equipped with floating bearings and engine oil lubrication/cooling passages. It withstands high temperature and ultra-high rotating speed, and relies on engine oil for heat dissipation to prevent bearing sintering.
Working Principle (4-step Cycle)
1. Exhaust gas drivingHigh-temperature and high-pressure engine exhaust flows into the turbine housing and impacts the turbine impeller to rotate at high speed.
2. Coaxial superchargingThe turbine shaft drives the compressor impeller to rotate synchronously at high speed.
3. Intake compressionThe compressor draws in filtered fresh air and compresses it; the pressure rises to 0.1–0.2 MPa with increased temperature.
4. IntercoolingThe high-temperature compressed air is cooled by the intercooler to increase air density, then enters the cylinder for more fuel injection and higher power output.
