Serving as the primary power component powering excavator hydraulic systems, the main hydraulic pump is driven by the combustion engine to convert mechanical motion into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It conveys pressurized hydraulic oil to hydraulic drive units, enabling every working action of construction excavators. Axial variable piston pumps are widely adopted as the standard power configuration for engineering excavators. Medium and large excavator models employ an integrated twin main pump system paired with a rear-mounted pilot gear pump module. Constant power control automatically scales down pump displacement when working loads surge, protecting engine components and enhancing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system matches fluid supply to actual on-site working demands and maintains low idle displacement to reduce fuel waste. The HP pressure limiting module truncates excessive pump displacement at peak pressure thresholds, shielding hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from burst failure and structural damage. Typical operational defects include internal oil seepage caused by piston abrasion, valve plate fracture or regulator clogging, leading to slow machine movement and insufficient power output capacity. A locked maximum-displacement regulator triggers persistent engine overload, black smoke exhaust and sudden shutdown during heavy-load construction scenarios. Severe internal leakage generates waste heat from hydraulic pressure loss, resulting in abnormal hydraulic oil temperature spikes. System air intrusion, inadequate hydraulic fluid reserves, and defective bearings or pistons create anomalous mechanical operating sounds. Daily equipment maintenance requires periodic renewal of hydraulic oil and filter elements to preserve the precision of internal pump components.
