The excavator swing reducer, popularly called the swing gearbox, is an essential transmission part bridging the slewing motor and the large slewing gear ring. Its key role lies in reducing speed and increasing torque, allowing the upper framework to rotate smoothly for a full 360 degrees.

Fundamental Structure

Sun Gear: Connected to slewing motor splines, it imports high‑speed power.Planet Gears: 3 to 4 per gear stage, revolving around and self‑rotating on the sun gear to transmit torque.Ring Gear: Stationary on the housing, meshing with planet gears.Planet Carrier: Outputs power to drive the lower drive pinion.
Brake: Internal wet multi‑disc brake, spring‑engaged and hydraulically released, preventing backward rotation.
Housing & Bearings: High‑strength cast/forged steel casing, supported by heavy‑duty bearings, dust‑tight and leak‑tight.

Hydraulic motor‑generated high‑speed low‑torque power travels via the sun gear, primary and secondary planetary gear groups to the output planet carrier. The pinion rotates slowly with high torque, meshing with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing to drive upper‑structure slewing.

Regular Faults & Fundamental Causes

Strange noise / Intermittent operation: Gear wear and pitting defects, bearing failure, insufficient or contaminated lubrication oil, improper gear backlash.
Oil seepage and spillage: Worn oil sealing elements, housing cracks, overfilled lubricant volume, clogged ventilation opening.
Sluggish or under‑powered rotation: Worn gears or bearing components, incomplete brake release action, hydraulic motor internal leakage, mismatched speed‑reduction ratio.
Excessive overheat condition: Inadequate oil level or degraded lubricant quality, overload operation, brake drag resistance, insufficient heat emission.
Gear skipping / Tooth breakage damage: Impact‑type loads, foreign debris infiltration, fatigue deterioration issues, shaft misalignment in assembly work.
