If piston shoes are removed, piston ball heads touch the swash plate only at discrete points, which will lead to immediate crushing and heavy wear.

Turn Point Contact into Surface Contact to Mitigate Contact Stress
Spherical structure is adopted for piston ball heads, and piston shoes have broad flat bottom planes.

Hydrostatic Oil Film Lubrication (Primary Role)
A small throttle bore is located at the centre of each piston shoe. High-pressure oil flows through piston inner passage, ball head and bore into the bottom recess and creates a 10～30 μm thin high-pressure oil film between piston shoe and swash plate.

The set plate pushes against piston shoe rear surfaces so they always fit closely onto the swash plate. When the cylinder block rotates 360 degrees, each piston finishes one suction stroke and one discharge stroke, and piston shoes slide repeatedly over the swash plate.
