Used in excavator main pumps, the swash plate is a vital internal component. It stays still while the cylinder block rotates, and piston shoes glide over its surface.

Functions

Piston shoes rest against the swash‑plate face. When the cylinder block rotates pistons, the slanted swash plate turns rotary movement into pistons’ back‑and‑forth movement for oil intake and pressurized oil output.

How much flow the pump delivers depends on swash‑plate tilt. A bigger tilt gives longer piston travel and higher flow. Flow almost disappears when tilt angle is zero.

The servo unit pushes the swash plate to swing to adjust flow. It is the major moving part that realizes variable‑displacement for the main pump.

Common Damage Modes & Fault Symptoms

‑ Scratches, pits and burn spots on working surface: caused by dirty oil, lack of oil and broken lubrication oil film. ‑ Worn or stuck swash plate support / trunnion: slow angle adjustment and uneven movement of swash plate.

Common machine issues: loud noise from main pump, low working pressure, weak machine movements, unsteady flow and slow reaction.

Associated damage: a damaged swash plate will ruin the matched piston‑shoe set. You need to check both parts together for repair.
