Core Functions
Enable piston return for oil suction. The swash plate drives pistons inward to build oil pressure. As components rotate to the suction side, pressure drops. The Set Plate retains all Piston Shoes and pulls pistons out of the cylinder block, expanding cylinder bore volume to draw in oil.
Locate and restrain every piston shoe. Each piston shoe neck runs through holes in the set plate, keeping the 9 piston shoes in their circular positions to stop tilting and shifting. The set plate spins together with the cylinder block to ensure uniform alignment of all piston shoes.
Transfer preload from the central spring. Central spring thrust transfers through the Ball Guide and Set Plate to all piston shoes. This keeps piston shoes firmly pressed against the working face of the Swash Plate and prevents shoe separation that results in pump pressure loss.

Common Failures
Hole abrasion, deformation and fracture
Scuffing on piston shoe holes and enlarged piston shoe clearance

Consequences: odd pump noise, fluctuating pressure and inadequate flow. In extreme cases, piston shoes separate from the swash plate and cause permanent hydraulic pump damage.
