The piston shoe slides against the surface of the shoe plate during rotation. The shoe plate is mounted on the swash plate, bearing the high-pressure thrust transmitted by the piston shoe. A hydrostatic oil film forms on its surface to reduce friction.
Common failure modes
Surface scoring, pitting and wear, oil film breakdown
