The swash plate is one of the key internal components for excavator main pumps. It remains stationary as the cylinder block rotates, with piston shoes sliding along its working surface.

Functions

Piston shoes press against the swash‑plate face. As the cylinder block drives the pistons to rotate, the inclined swash plate converts rotary motion into reciprocating linear motion of pistons for oil suction and pressure delivery.

Pump displacement depends on the swash‑plate inclination angle. A larger tilt leads to longer piston stroke and higher output flow. The flow drops to nearly zero when the inclination angle is zero.

Driven by the servo assembly, the swash plate swings to adjust flow. It serves as the vital actuating part for the main pump’s variable‑displacement function.

Common Damage Modes & Fault Symptoms

‑ Scuffing, pitting and burning on working surfaces: triggered by oil contamination, insufficient oil supply and oil‑film breakdown. ‑ Wear and jamming of swash plate support / trunnion: slow swash‑plate angle adjustment and jerky movements.

Typical machine faults: loud main‑pump noise, pressure build‑up failure, weak equipment performance, unstable flow and slow response.

Secondary damage: a defective swash plate may damage the whole set of piston shoes. Joint inspection of both parts is required during maintenance.
