The main hydraulic pump acts as the pivotal power element of excavator hydraulic circuits, obtaining engine drive force to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It transmits pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to power all working movements of the excavator. The vast majority of engineering construction excavators adopt axial variable displacement piston pumps. Mid-to-large size excavators feature an integrated dual main pump and rear pilot gear pump unit. Two standalone high-pressure oil supply loops deliver oil to the main control valve, enabling compound working motions, with a rated working pressure range from 28MPa to 35MPa. Mounted at the machine tail, the low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool actuation. Piston groups fixed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate alongside the main shaft, accomplishing oil absorption and pressurization cycles. Changing the swash plate’s inclination angle adjusts piston stroke length, which modifies the pump’s displacement. An external servo regulator controls swash plate motion according to hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the swash plate angle boosts flow rate and operational speed, while decreasing it reduces fuel consumption and avoids engine flameout. The valve plate divides low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet channels to realize uniform hydraulic oil distribution. The pump integrates three core control functions to ensure reliable working performance. Constant power control automatically decreases pump displacement under rising load pressure, protecting the engine and enhancing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system supplies flow according to actual working requirements and maintains low idle displacement for fuel conservation. The HP pressure limiting function cuts pump displacement at peak pressure levels, preventing hydraulic pipeline and oil cylinder rupture damage. Common equipment faults include internal leakage caused by worn pistons, fractured valve plates or clogged regulators, resulting in sluggish operation and inadequate power delivery. A stuck maximum-displacement regulator triggers engine overload, black smoke and stalling during heavy-duty work. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, leading to abnormal hydraulic oil temperature elevation. Air entering the hydraulic system, low hydraulic fluid levels and defective bearings or pistons produce abnormal operating noise. Daily maintenance requires regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent wear of precision internal parts. It is critical to maintain tight sealing of oil suction pipelines to stop air ingestion and equipment vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to sustain stable pump performance.
