As the core power component in excavator hydraulic loops, the main hydraulic pump draws driving power from the engine to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It delivers pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to realize all working actions of the excavator. Most construction-grade excavators are equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavators use an integrated dual main pump and rear pilot gear pump assembly. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits feed the main control valve, supporting compound working motions, with rated working pressure ranging from 28MPa to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the machine rear runs at 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for control handle manipulation and main valve spool adjustment. Piston assemblies fixed on the cylinder block and pump shell rotate with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization workflows. Adjusting the swash plate tilt angle alters piston stroke, which regulates the pump’s displacement value. An external servo actuator governs swash plate movement based on real-time hydraulic feedback signals. A greater tilt angle increases flow rate and working efficiency, while a smaller angle minimizes fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate separates low-pressure intake and high-pressure outlet passages to achieve effective hydraulic oil distribution. Three core control systems guarantee the pump’s reliable operation. Constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement under increased load conditions, protecting the engine and improving power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system delivers flow volume matching actual working demands and maintains low idle displacement to save fuel. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure values, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Typical operational malfunctions include internal leakage due to piston wear, cracked valve plates or blocked regulators, leading to slow operating speed and insufficient power output. A locked maximum-displacement regulator results in engine overload, black smoke exhaust and stalling during heavy-load operation. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, causing abnormal rises in hydraulic oil temperature. System air intake, insufficient hydraulic oil volume and defective bearings or pistons generate unusual operating noise. Regular daily maintenance entails replacing hydraulic oil and filter elements periodically to prevent abrasion of precision internal components. Ensuring good tightness of oil suction pipes avoids air ingestion and machine vibration, and maintaining standard hydraulic oil levels keeps pump performance stable.
