The main hydraulic pump acts as the primary power core of excavator hydraulic circuits, utilizing engine driving force to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It delivers pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to drive all functional working motions of the excavator. The majority of construction excavators are equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Mid-to-large excavator models employ an integrated dual main pump structure paired with a rear pilot gear pump. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits feed the main control valve, supporting flexible compound working movements, with rated working pressure spanning 28MPa to 35MPa. Positioned at the machine rear, the low-pressure pilot pump works at 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for control handle manipulation and main valve spool adjustment. Piston assemblies secured on the cylinder block and pump shell rotate with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization processes. Altering the swash plate’s tilt angle adjusts piston stroke, thereby regulating the pump’s displacement value. An external servo regulator controls swash plate movement according to real-time hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the swash plate angle improves flow rate and working efficiency, while decreasing it lowers fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate isolates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to realize directional hydraulic oil distribution. Three core control functions are configured on the pump to ensure dependable operation. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under increased load pressure, protecting the engine and enhancing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system delivers flow based on actual working needs and maintains low idle displacement for fuel conservation. The HP pressure limiting function minimizes pump displacement at peak pressure to protect hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Typical malfunctions include internal leakage stemming from piston wear, valve plate breakage or regulator blockage, leading to slow operation speed and insufficient power output. A locked maximum-displacement regulator results in engine overload, black smoke exhaust and stalling during heavy-load operation. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, causing abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. System air entry, insufficient hydraulic oil volume and defective bearings or pistons generate unusual operating noise. Daily upkeep requires regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent abrasion of precision internal parts. It is critical to maintain good tightness of oil suction pipes to avoid air ingestion and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to preserve stable pump performance.
