Functioning as the core power part of excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump is driven by the engine to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It sends pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to enable all working actions of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are installed on most engineering excavators. Medium and large excavators use an integrated assembly of dual main pumps and a rear-mounted pilot gear pump. Two independent high-pressure oil supply loops deliver fluid to the main control valve, supporting compound working motions, with rated working pressure between 28MPa and 35MPa. The tail-mounted low-pressure pilot pump runs at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool control. Piston assemblies attached to the cylinder block and pump housing rotate alongside the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization processes. Varying the swash plate tilt angle adjusts piston stroke, which modulates the pump’s displacement. An external servo regulator governs swash plate motion in response to hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the tilt angle boosts flow rate and working speed, while reducing it cuts fuel consumption and avoids engine flameout. The valve plate separates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to achieve hydraulic oil distribution. Three core control systems ensure the pump’s reliable operation. Constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement under increased load pressure, protecting the engine and improving power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system supplies flow according to actual working requirements and maintains low idle displacement for fuel economy. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure values, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Frequent failures include internal leakage caused by piston wear, damaged valve plates or clogged regulators, leading to slow operation and inadequate power output. A locked maximum-displacement regulator triggers engine overload, black smoke exhaust and stalling during heavy-duty operation. Excessive internal leakage turns pressure loss into thermal energy, causing abnormal rises in hydraulic oil temperature. System air intake, insufficient hydraulic oil and faulty bearings or pistons generate abnormal operating noise. Daily maintenance requires periodic replacement of hydraulic oil and filter cartridges to prevent abrasion of precision internal components. Maintaining good tightness of oil suction pipes prevents air ingestion and machine vibration, and keeping hydraulic fluid at standard levels stabilizes pump working performance.
