Function
The hydraulic main pump is the core power unit of excavator hydraulic systems. Driven by the engine, it converts mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic energy and feeds pressurized fluid to boom, stick, bucket, travel and swing motors to power all working motions of the equipment.

Type
Axial variable piston pumps are widely equipped on construction excavators. Medium and large excavators are fitted with integrated dual main pumps, with a pilot gear pump installed at the rear.
The dual high-pressure pump consists of two independent pump sections, which deliver oil to different ports of the main control valve respectively to enable compound movements, with working pressure between 28 and 35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump mounted on the pump end operates at 3~4MPa with low flow rate, and supplies control oil for operating levers and spools of the main valve.

Internal Parts
Housing and cylinder block: A set of pistons rotate together with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressurization.
The swash plate adjusts its inclination to change piston stroke and pump displacement.
The externally installed regulator drives the swash plate according to hydraulic signals. A larger tilt angle increases displacement and flow for faster operation; a smaller tilt angle reduces displacement and fuel consumption, and prevents the engine from stalling.
The valve plate divides the oil inlet and high-pressure outlet to realize fluid distribution.

Three Control Modes
Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under heavy loads to protect the engine from stall and make full use of its rated power.
LS load sensing control provides oil flow on demand and maintains low displacement at idle state to save fuel.
HP pressure cut-off function reduces pump displacement to the minimum when pressure reaches the limit, protecting hydraulic hoses and cylinders from burst failure.

Common Failures
Worn pistons or valve plate will cause internal leakage, and a stuck regulator also leads to slow response and insufficient power.
If the regulator is locked at maximum displacement, excessive load will appear, resulting in engine stall and black exhaust smoke under heavy working conditions.
Serious internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat, which causes the temperature of hydraulic oil to rise abnormally.
Air entering the pipeline, insufficient hydraulic oil or damaged bearings and pistons will generate abnormal running noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filters periodically to stop contaminants from wearing core components. Ensure the suction pipeline is well sealed to prevent air ingress and machine vibration. Maintain the hydraulic oil at standard level to avoid permanent pump damage.
